Fragmentary Cartographies
The Fragmentary Cartographies series has been initiated in London,
from small localization maps (hotels, touristy attractions, parks, night
clubs, schools, etc) cut of folders, flyers, magazines and news papers.
These small fragments of the city had been pasted on a white surface
with the same size of a real map of London, accurately on the same position
where they would be in this complete map of the city.
From these small fragments, the city is incompletely and imperfectly
reconstructed (given the differences of scale and detailing of each
small map), in a new pulverized, chaotic and multidimensional interpretation
of the city, closer to the urban experience we have nowadays. A traditional
map, with only one face and static in time does not handle the speed
and multiplicity of the contemporary life.
The same process was already repeated for other cities: Rio De Janeiro
(version #1: 1998; version #2: 1998/2000), São Paulo (1998) and
Belo Horizonte (2003). |
