A intervenção urbana OCUPAÇÃO MONARCA - Lisboa II é uma continuação de OCUPAÇÃO MONARCA - Lisboa, realizada em 2015, só que agora os azulejos de papel foram todos pintados à mão pelo artista (tinta acrílica), de forma que a referência aos azulejos de figura avulsa portugueses seja ainda mais direta [conheça >>1 >>2]. Como na intervenção urbana anterior, os azulejos de papel foram aplicados na forma de lambe lambe, com cola de amido, sobre paredes azulejadas, como complemento às faltas de azulejos nestas fachadas.

Nesta intervenção temos novamente como base a icônica imagem de um soldado em uniforme camuflado e armado com um fuzil, com asas de borboleta saindo de suas costas, que pode ser encontrada em vários outros trabalhos do artista, acompanhada de outros desenhos representativos do universo militar: botinas e capacetes, tanques de guerra, granadas, bombas, pistolas, entre outras.

Desta vez, ao invés da ornamentação floral se dar sobre as imagens militares, os azulejos de papel com estas imagens são intercalados por azulejos de papel com imagens de flores copiadas dos azulejos originais produzidos pela fábrica lisboeta Viúva Lamego entre o século XIX e XX.

Os projetos de arte urbana de Fábio Carvalho atuam como pequenas inserções, peças que invadem o espaço quase como um parasita. As intervenções aparecem mais por tensionarem o que já está lá, em vez de impor-se de cima para baixo a um espaço. As intervenções exigem uma certa intimidade para entrar em ação. Eles permanecem dormentes até que você as ative com o seu olhar. Eles não gritam - sussurram.

O trabalho atual de Fábio Carvalho busca propor uma reflexão sobre estereótipos e expectativas de gênero, através da sobreposição e conflito entre os clichés de masculinidade ideal, como o militar, o atleta musculoso, o cowboy, o trabalhador braçal, com elementos e labores tradicionalmente atribuídos ao terreno do feminino, como padrões decorativos florais, a louça de porcelana, flores e borboletas, bordados e rendas. Com sua produção, o artista procura questionar o senso comum de que força e fragilidade, virilidade e poesia, masculinidade e vulnerabilidade não podem coexistir, e nos lembrar que tudo aquilo que nos parece eterno e definitivo, são na verdade acordos no tempo e espaço.

The urban intervention MONARCH OCCUPATION - Lisbon II consists of a continuation of the previous intervention, MONARCH OCCUPATION - Lisbon, that took place in 2015. This time, instead of using rubber stamps to print the paper wall tiles, the artist did all the painting by hand, to achieve a more accurate ressemblance to the original portuguese's single figure wall tiles [ examples >> ]. Then, the paper tiles were pasted on tiled facades, with starch glue, where the original ceramic tiles were already missing, by decay or theft. No real tile were covered by the paper tiles.

This intervention is also based on the iconic image of a armed soldier in camouflage uniform, with butterfly wings out of his back, which can be found in a variety of other art works by the artist, accompanied by new images, all of them belonging to the military universe: boots and helmets, tanks, grenades, bombs, pistols, among others.

This time the military ilustrations were not decorated with floral ornamentation; instead, the military paper tiles were interleaved by floral paper tiles, copied from real floral ceramic tiles, produced in the 1800s and 1900s by Viúva Lamego ceramic factory (Lisbon).

Fábio Carvalho's urban art projects act as small insertions, pieces that invade the space almost like a parasite. The interventions appear mainly by tensioning what is already there, rather than imposing themselves top down to a space. The interventions require a certain intimacy to get into action. They remain dormant until you activate them with your look. They do not shout - they whisper.

Fábio Carvalho's current art work attempts to propose a reflection on gender stereotypes and expectations, by overlapping clichés of the "ideal" masculinity , like the military, muscular athlete, the cowboy, the handyman, with elements and labors traditionally assigned to the female world, like floral decorative patterns, porcelain tableware, flowers and butterflies, embroidery and lacework. With his production, the artist seeks to question the common sense that strength and fragility, virility and poetry, masculinity and vulnerability cannot coexist, and remember that what seems eternal and definitive, are actually cultural agreements in time and space.
