Finalizei um trabalho que ficou parado por tempo imperdoavelmente longo (9 anos!). A vida, afinal, quase nunca é um percurso reto, sem desvios ou percalços. O importante é tomar seu tempo, e quando puder, voltar à caminhada. Pouco depois que comecei este trabalho, que é uma releitura de um anterior, surgiu uma residência artística em Portugal, onde passei 2 meses. Acabei deixando-o de lado. O interessante é que minha forma de trabalhar com bordado mudou bastante nesses 9 anos, o que se reflete no que pretendia para este trabalho, e como no final ele resultou. Eu gosto muito desse tecido que usei como base, comprado em 2011, pois me lembram azulejos, algo que eu viria também a mexer só alguns anos depois (2015), e cria-se assim uma conexão entre diferentes períodos da minha produção.

Na série Pérolas aos Poucos temos alguns dos meus primeiros bordados. O interesse pelo bordado surgiu durante uma residência artística em Portugal (2011), quando tive meu primeiro contato com o “lenços de namorados”. Nesta altura eu já empregava apliques de bordados industriais em meus trabalhos têxteis, mas ocorreu-me que seria ainda mais potente se eu fizesse o seu próprio bordado. Além de agregar esta técnica à minha prática artística, poderia reforçar a discussão sobre os estereótipos de gênero submetendo-me a uma atividade considerada por muitos como feminina, e mesmo “errada” se executada por um homem.

I've finalized a work that has been on hold for an unforgivable long time (9 years!). Life, after all, is almost never a straight path without deviations or setbacks. The important thing is to take your time and when you can, get back on track. Shortly after I started this job, which is a reinterpretation of a previous one, I was invited to an artist-in-residence project in Portugal, where I spent 2 months. I ended up leaving this work aside. The interesting thing is that my way of working with embroidery has changed a lot in these 9 years, which is reflected in what I intended for this work and how it turned out in the end. I really like this fabric that I used as the base, bought in 2011, because it reminds me of wall tiles, something that I would also come to work with only a few years later (2015), and thus creates a connection between different periods of my production.

in the Pearls to a peek series we see some of my first embroideries. The interest in embroidery arose during an artist-in-residence program in Portugal (2011), when I had my first contact with the "valentine's handkerchiefs". At this point, I was already using industrial embroidery appliques in my textile works, but it occurred to me that it would be even more powerful if I did my own embroidery. In addition to adding this technique to my artistic practice, I could reinforce the discussion about gender stereotypes by submitting myself to an activity considered by many to be feminine and even “wrong” if executed by a man.
