Grou(p)ting is a group action proposal, where the very public was responsible for assembling the work. For this project a new batch of paper tiles has been printed, exactly like the paper tiles originally created in Lisbon, and used in the Apposition Urban Intervention, carried on that city in more than 45 points, from February to March 2015.
However, this time it was not the artist who pasted the paper tiles on the wall, but the public itself was responsible for the collective creation of the final composition of the work, in a direct reference to Athos Bulcão, a Brazilian modern artist who gave the tile panels on new meaning, leaving behind the grandiose paintings as was the tradition for many centuries, and introducing the idea of multiplication and rotation of simple geometric elements.
In many of his panels, Athos let the workers decide how the tiles should be applied on the wall, giving up authorship of the final composition of the panels, such as one of the panels on the outside walls of the Samba's Museum, Rio de Janeiro (1983). |
